False. Oxytocin is synthesized in the hypothalamus, specifically in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei. It is then transported down the axons of hypothalamic neurons, through the pituitary stalk, and stored in nerve terminals within the posterior pituitary gland (neurohypophysis). The posterior pituitary is essentially a storage and release site for oxytocin (and vasopressin); it does not synthesize hormones itself. Upon appropriate stimulation (like suckling during breastfeeding or cervical dilation during labor), action potentials cause the release of oxytocin from these nerve terminals directly into the bloodstream. This is an example of neurosecretion, where neurons secrete hormones. The anterior pituitary, in contrast, synthesizes its own hormones (like ACTH, TSH, FSH, LH, GH, prolactin).
