The cornerstone of sterile technique is to prevent contamination of the sterile field and supplies. The most important principle is that a sterile object remains sterile only when touched by another sterile object. Therefore, the nurse must ensure that only sterile items (gloves, instruments, dressings) come into contact with the sterile wound or the sterile field set up for the dressing change. Any break in this principle (e.g., touching a sterile gauze with a non-sterile hand) contaminates the item, requiring it to be discarded.
