Anastomotic stricture (or bladder neck contracture) is a potential complication of radical prostatectomy. During the surgery, the bladder is disconnected from the urethra after the prostate is removed and then reconnected (anastomosed). In some men, scar tissue can form at this connection site, causing a narrowing or stricture. This can lead to obstructive urinary symptoms such as a weak stream, straining, and a feeling of incomplete emptying, sometimes occurring months after surgery. Treatment may involve dilation (stretching the stricture with instruments) or a surgical procedure to cut the scar tissue (transurethral incision of the bladder neck). Other major complications include urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Lymphocele (a collection of lymph fluid) is a potential complication of the pelvic lymph node dissection that often accompanies the surgery.
