When the head rotates left, endolymph in the left horizontal semicircular canal flows toward the ampulla, increasing activity in the hair cells and the vestibular nerve. This stimulates the eyes to move slowly to the right (opposite the head movement), followed by a fast corrective saccade to the left, producing nystagmus.
