Granulation tissue forms during the proliferative phase of healing. It gets its name from the granular appearance of the tiny new blood vessels (capillaries) growing into the wound bed. This tissue is pink, moist, and very fragile, but it's essential for filling in wounds and eventually maturing into scar tissue.
