This statement is false. Newborns are born with very low levels of immunoglobulins because their immune system is immature and they have not yet been exposed to the environmental bacteria that stimulate the production of these 'natural' antibodies. Production of ABO antibodies (anti-A and/or anti-B) begins around 3 to 6 months of age as the infant's immune system develops and is exposed to bacterial flora in the gut. Antibodies present in a newborn's serum are usually IgG antibodies passively transferred from the mother through the placenta, not the baby's own IgM anti-A or anti-B. Therefore, reverse grouping (testing the patient's serum against known A and B cells) is not reliable in infants under 3-6 months.
