The primary and most effective method for restoring obliterated serial numbers on metal surfaces is **chemical etching**. This technique exploits the fact that when a serial number is stamped or engraved into metal, the crystalline structure of the metal beneath the impression is permanently compressed and stressed, creating a zone of strain. Even if the surface is filed, ground, or polished smooth, this strained subsurface layer remains. In the chemical etching process, the smoothed surface is first polished to remove scratches. Then, an appropriate chemical reagent (etchant) is carefully applied. The strained metal in the area of the original serial number reacts and dissolves at a faster rate than the surrounding undisturbed metal. As a result, the serial number becomes visible as a relief pattern on the surface. Common etchants include mixtures of acids like hydrochloric acid with copper chloride for steel, or nitric acid for aluminum. The restored number must be photographed immediately, as the process continues and can eventually over-etch and destroy the detail. Other methods, like magnetic particle inspection or heat treatment, are used for certain metals but are less common than chemical etching.
