Remotivation therapy aims to stimulate interest, awareness, and communication in withdrawn or regressed psychiatric patients through structured group sessions focusing on neutral topics. Developed for long-term institutionalized patients, it uses five-step process: climate of acceptance (welcome); bridge to reality (topic introduction); sharing the world we live in (discussion using objects, pictures); appreciation of the work of the world (connecting to productivity); and climate of appreciation (closure). Topics are concrete, non-threatening (nature, work, hobbies). Benefits: improves socialization; reduces withdrawal; enhances self-esteem; and prepares for more intensive therapy. Nurses facilitate as group leaders, encouraging participation without pressure. Documentation includes participation and responses. This therapy is particularly useful for patients with chronic schizophrenia or dementia who are disengaged. It serves as stepping stone to higher functioning. Sessions are short, structured, and repetitive. Remotivation differs from reminiscence by focusing on present reality rather than past.
