Hirsutism is the medical term for excessive growth of terminal (coarse, pigmented) hair in women, following a male-pattern distribution. This includes areas such as the face (beard area, upper lip), chest, areolae, linea alba (lower abdomen), and inner thighs. It results from increased androgen (male hormone) activity on hair follicles, either due to elevated androgen levels (as in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - PCOS, adrenal disorders, or tumors) or increased sensitivity of hair follicles to normal levels of androgens. Hirsutism is different from hypertrichosis, which is a generalized excessive hair growth not confined to androgen-dependent areas and can be caused by medications, metabolic disorders, or heredity. Hirsutism is a common symptom of endocrine disorders and can be a source of significant psychological distress.
