This statement is true. Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) is a measure of the average size of platelets in a blood sample. In Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), platelets are destroyed by autoantibodies, primarily in the spleen. The bone marrow responds to this peripheral destruction by increasing platelet production. In this accelerated state, megakaryocytes release platelets that are younger and larger than normal. These larger platelets (megathrombocytes) are also often more functionally active. Therefore, in ITP, the platelet count is low, but the MPV is typically high. This contrasts with conditions where low platelets are due to bone marrow failure (e.g., aplastic anemia, chemotherapy), where both the count and MPV tend to be low. The MPV can be a useful, though non-specific, clue in distinguishing causes of thrombocytopenia.
