Q: Which stain is used to identify Helicobacter pylori in gastric biopsies?

Did You Know?

False. The whiff test, also known as the amine test, is performed by adding a drop of 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH) to a sample of vaginal discharge. A positive result—a fishy, amine-like odor—is characteristic of bacterial vaginosis (BV), not trichomoniasis. BV is caused by an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria that produce volatile amines. While Trichomonas vaginalis infection can sometimes cause an unpleasant odor, it does not typically produce a positive whiff test. The definitive diagnosis of trichomoniasis relies on observing motile trophozoites with jerky motility and an undulating membrane on a wet mount, positive culture, antigen detection, or nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs).
