Crisis intervention aims to return the individual to pre-crisis functioning by providing immediate, short-term assistance. Crises are temporary states of disequilibrium overwhelming usual coping mechanisms. Goals: ensure safety; reduce anxiety; facilitate problem-solving; mobilize support; and restore equilibrium. Roberts' Seven-Stage Crisis Intervention Model: assess lethality; establish rapport; identify problems; explore feelings; explore past coping; implement action plan; follow-up. Nurses in crisis: remain calm; listen actively; assess safety; help identify needs; explore options; and develop concrete plan. Crisis differs from ongoing mental illness though may precipitate it. Intervention is time-limited (usually 1-6 sessions). Successful crisis resolution can lead to growth and improved coping. Nurses provide empathic, directive approach. Documentation includes risk assessment, interventions, and safety plan. Referrals for ongoing treatment if needed. Crisis hotlines, mobile crisis teams, and emergency departments provide crisis services.
