Insulin is the primary hormone responsible for lowering blood glucose levels, a state known as hypoglycemia. It is secreted by pancreatic beta cells in response to elevated blood glucose after a meal. Insulin acts on target cells (especially in liver, muscle, and adipose tissue) to promote glucose uptake from the blood. It does this by stimulating the insertion of GLUT4 glucose transporters into the cell membranes. In the liver and muscle, insulin promotes the storage of glucose as glycogen (glycogenesis). It also inhibits glucose production by the liver (gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis). Additionally, insulin promotes fat storage and protein synthesis. By facilitating the removal of glucose from the bloodstream and inhibiting its production, insulin effectively reduces blood glucose concentration, maintaining it within a narrow, normal range.
