This statement is false. Leydig cell tumors, which arise from the testosterone-producing interstitial cells of the testis, are usually benign. In fact, approximately 90% of Leydig cell tumors are benign. They are the most common type of sex cord-stromal tumor in men. They can occur at any age but have a bimodal peak in children (ages 5-10) and adults (30-60). In adults, they often present as a painless testicular mass and may produce androgens (causing no symptoms in men) or, rarely, estrogens (causing gynecomastia or loss of libido). Malignant behavior, characterized by metastasis, is rare but more likely in older patients, with larger tumor size, and certain histological features. The vast majority are cured by simple surgical removal (orchiectomy).
