The Cellophane Tape Test, also known as the Scotch tape test or perianal swab, is a simple, non-invasive diagnostic method specifically designed to detect eggs of the pinworm, Enterobius vermicularis. Pinworm females migrate out of the anus at night to deposit eggs on the perianal skin. Stool examination is insensitive for detecting pinworm eggs because they are usually not passed in feces. The test involves pressing a piece of clear adhesive tape against the perianal skin early in the morning, before bathing or defecation. The tape is then placed adhesive-side down on a microscope slide and examined under low power for the characteristic asymmetrical, flattened eggs. It is the diagnostic method of choice for enterobiasis.
