Excessive and uncontrolled noise is a significant stressor in a healthcare environment. For a patient, constant noise from alarms, trolleys, staff conversations, and equipment interferes with the ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Sleep is not a luxury in recovery; it is a physiological necessity. During sleep, the body repairs tissues, consolidates memories, regulates hormones, and restores energy. Disrupted sleep leads to increased stress, a weakened immune response, higher sensitivity to pain, delayed healing, and confusion. Therefore, actively minimizing noise is a direct nursing intervention to promote the restorative rest that is fundamental to patient recovery.
