Q: What condition results from excessive algal growth in water bodies due to fertilizer pollution?

Platelet satellitism is an in vitro artifact where platelets adhere to the surface of neutrophils (and sometimes monocytes) in blood samples anticoagulated with EDTA. The exact mechanism is not fully understood but may involve EDTA-induced exposure of hidden antigens on neutrophils. This clumping of platelets around white cells can cause two main problems for automated analyzers: 1) It can lead to a falsely low platelet count because the clumped platelets are not counted as individual cells, and 2) It can sometimes cause the analyzer to misclassify the neutrophil-platelet clump as an unusual cell type. It's important to recognize this on a blood film to prevent reporting incorrect results.
