Earth Geometry

This topic applies the concept of Earth Geometry using latitudes and longitudes to solve real-life problems in navigation, aviation, and time zones. Learners will identify great circles (equator, meridians) and small circles (latitudes), locate points using coordinates, calculate differences in latitudes and longitudes, and compute distances along parallels and meridians in kilometres and nautical miles. They will find the shortest distance (great circle route) between two points on Earth's surface and calculate time differences and speed in knots. This practical topic links mathematics to geography and global systems, as assessed in ECZ examinations.

Outcomes

If you passExcellent! You can now apply Earth geometry to calculate global distances and time differences, a unique and practical skill for your ECZ geography and maths papers.
If you don't pass yetEarth geometry uses specific formulas involving the Earth's radius. Distinguish between distances along a parallel of latitude and along a meridian. Review the formulas and units carefully.
