The Richter scale, developed by Charles Richter in 1935, measures the magnitude of earthquakes based on the amplitude of seismic waves recorded by seismographs. It is a logarithmic scale, meaning each whole number increase represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude and about 31.6 times more energy release. The Moment Magnitude Scale is now more commonly used by seismologists for large earthquakes.
