REPORTING VERBS are the verbs used to introduce indirect speech. They indicate that someone's words are being reported rather than quoted directly. Common reporting verbs include: say, tell, ask, reply, answer, explain, announce, declare, suggest, advise, warn, order, promise, etc. The choice of reporting verb affects the meaning and structure of the indirect speech. Example: 'I'm sorry,' he said → He apologized. Different reporting verbs create different shades of meaning.
