QUOTATION MARKS or INVERTED COMMAS are used to enclose direct speech but are removed in indirect speech. Example: Direct: She said, 'I am happy.' Indirect: She said that she was happy. The quotation marks visually separate the exact words spoken from the rest of the sentence. In indirect speech, since we're not quoting exact words, we don't use quotation marks. Other direct speech punctuation like exclamation marks and question marks also change in indirect speech.
Break down complex topics into smaller, manageable chunks for easier recall.
