The quadratic formula $x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}$ is derived from completing the square of the general quadratic equation $ax^2 + bx + c = 0$. It works for all quadratic equations regardless of whether the roots are real or complex, rational or irrational. The discriminant $(b^2 - 4ac)$ determines the nature of the roots but doesn't prevent the formula from being applicable.
