The word 'IF' or 'WHETHER' is used to introduce yes/no questions in indirect speech. Example: Direct: 'Are you tired?' he asked. Indirect: He asked if I was tired. Or: He asked whether I was tired. Both are correct, but 'if' is more common in everyday speech. For choice questions, 'whether' is preferred: Direct: 'Do you want tea or coffee?' Indirect: She asked whether I wanted tea or coffee.
