Covalent bonds are formed between non-metals. Oxygen and carbon are both non-metals and can form single covalent bonds (e.g., in carbon monoxide, CO, which has a triple bond, or in carbon dioxide, CO₂, which has double bonds, but they can form single bonds in other compounds).
