Salicylate (aspirin) overdose uncouples oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria, particularly in skeletal muscle and the brain. This means the energy from electron transport is released as heat instead of being used to make ATP. This leads to hyperthermia, along with other symptoms of salicylism (tinnitus, hyperventilation, metabolic acidosis).
