This statement is true, but with caution. The concept is known as the 'dosage effect.' In theory, an individual who is homozygous for an allele (e.g., A/A) produces more of the corresponding transferase enzyme than a heterozygous individual (A/O). This can lead to a higher density of A antigens on the red cell surface. In serological testing, this might manifest as stronger agglutination (e.g., a 4+ reaction) with anti-A in the homozygous individual compared to a weaker reaction (e.g., 2+ or 3+) in the heterozygous individual. However, this is not a reliable or definitive method for determining zygosity. Reaction strength can be influenced by many factors: the sensitivity of the antiserum, technique, the presence of subgroups, and other genetic factors. Molecular genotyping (DNA testing) is the only accurate way to determine zygosity. The dosage effect is more of an observable phenomenon than a diagnostic tool.
