When both urine cytology and flow cytometry are requested, the specimen should be collected in a sterile container without fixatives and processed promptly. For flow cytometry, a fresh, unfixed sample is required; an aliquot should be sent to the flow cytometry lab immediately (or within 24 hours if refrigerated). For cytology, a separate aliquot should be fixed in 50-70% ethanol or processed for liquid-based cytology. Alternatively, the entire specimen can be sent to the laboratory for proper triaging; the lab will divide it appropriately. Communication between departments is essential to ensure both tests receive adequate material. Flow cytometry requires viable cells for surface marker analysis.
