Traditional gunshot residue (GSR) analysis, often performed using **Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS)**, looks for unique, spherical particles that contain a combination of **lead (Pb), barium (Ba), and antimony (Sb)**. This triad of elements originates from the primer of most modern centerfire cartridges. When the primer is struck, these metals are vaporized and then condense into characteristic spherical or molten-droplet-shaped microparticles. Finding a cluster of several such particles on a suspect's hands, clothing, or nearby surfaces is considered strong evidence of recent proximity to a discharged firearm. It's important to note that some 'non-toxic' or 'heavy metal-free' primers may use different compositions (e.g., strontium, zinc, or titanium), and environmental sources can sometimes contain one or two of these elements. Therefore, analysts look for the unique morphology (spherical) and the specific elemental combination.
