Informed consent is a legal and ethical process that is fundamentally based on the patient's right to autonomy and self-determination. For consent to be valid, the patient must be provided with all relevant information about a proposed treatment or procedure—including benefits, risks, alternatives, and consequences of refusal—in a manner they can understand. They must then voluntarily agree without coercion. The nurse often plays a key role in witnessing the consent process and ensuring the patient's understanding.
