RACE is a universally recognized acronym used in healthcare for the initial steps to take during a fire. It stands for: R - Rescue/Remove anyone in immediate danger. A - Alarm/Activate the fire alarm system and notify appropriate personnel. C - Confine the fire by closing doors and windows. E - Extinguish/Evacuate—attempt to extinguish the fire with an appropriate extinguisher if safe to do so, or prepare for evacuation. Nurses must be familiar with this sequence to ensure a safe and organized response.
