The most reliable evidence for a positive identification of burned (or otherwise severely compromised) remains is a comparison of **antemortem and postmortem dental radiographs (X-rays)**. Teeth and dental restorations (fillings, crowns, root canals) are extremely resistant to fire and decomposition. A **postmortem dental examination** of the remains would involve charting the present teeth, any dental work, and taking new X-rays of the jaws. An **antemortem dental record** from the suspected individual's dentist would include similar charts and, crucially, diagnostic X-rays. The unique patterns seen on X-rays—such as the shape of tooth roots, the morphology of sinus cavities above the teeth, the pattern of bone trabeculation, and the exact contours and margins of fillings—are highly individualistic. A forensic odontologist can directly compare these features. A match provides a very high degree of certainty for identification, often accepted as positive proof of identity in courts of law.
