Q: A blood donor with a history of tuberculosis is permanently deferred from donating blood. True or False?

Did You Know?

This statement is true. The John Milton Hagen (JMH) blood group system antigens are carried on the protein product of the **SEMA7A gene**, which is semaphorin 7A (also known as CD108). Semaphorin 7A is a GPI-anchored glycoprotein involved in immune and neural functions. As mentioned earlier, JMH antigen expression weakens with age. Antibodies to JMH are generally not clinically significant. This is another example of the molecular basis of a blood group system being elucidated through genetics.
