Building rapport and trust establishes foundation for therapeutic relationship through genuine connection, reliability, and empathetic understanding that enhances communication and treatment adherence. Key elements: active listening; consistency; honesty; respect; and empathy. Techniques: appropriate self-disclosure; finding common ground; maintaining eye contact (culturally appropriate); using patient's preferred name; and following through on promises. Trust develops over time through consistent, competent care. Barriers: cultural differences; past negative healthcare experiences; power imbalance; and time constraints. Nurses assess trust level and repair breaches if occur. Documentation should reflect relationship development. Trust improves: information sharing; adherence to treatment; satisfaction; and outcomes. In mental health, trust is especially important for therapeutic alliance. Building rapport begins at first encounter and continues throughout care. It requires self-awareness of verbal and nonverbal communication. Trust enables collaborative partnership in care.
