Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious cardiovascular complication of immobility. When muscles are inactive, especially in the legs, the venous return of blood to the heart slows down significantly. This venous stasis, combined with potential changes in blood coagulation, creates a high risk for blood clots to form in the deep veins, typically of the calf or thigh. A DVT is dangerous because a piece of the clot can break off, travel through the bloodstream, and become lodged in the pulmonary arteries, causing a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE). Preventive measures like early ambulation, leg exercises, compression stockings, and anticoagulant medications are crucial for immobile patients.
