Ethanol is a small, polar, and non-ionizable molecule. It can dissolve in both water and lipids to some extent. Simple diffusion is the movement of molecules directly through the lipid bilayer of cell membranes, driven by a concentration gradient. Because ethanol is small and moderately lipid-soluble, it crosses intestinal cells mainly by simple diffusion.
