Metastatic calcification happens when there's too much calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia), causing calcium salts to deposit in normal tissues throughout the body, especially in blood vessels, kidneys, lungs, and stomach lining. This is different from dystrophic calcification, which occurs in damaged or dead tissues despite normal blood calcium levels.
