In Bowlby's Phases of Mourning, the second phase is often called 'Yearning and Searching.' After the initial shock and numbness wear off, the reality of the loss sets in, and the survivor experiences intense psychological pain. This phase is characterized by active yearning or pining for the lost person, restless searching behaviors (which can be physical or mental), preoccupation with memories of the deceased, and often feelings of anger or protest at the unfairness of the loss. It is a period of high emotional distress as the individual struggles to comprehend and reconcile the permanent absence.
