Troponin is a regulatory protein complex on actin filaments consisting of three subunits: Troponin C (binds calcium ions), Troponin I (inhibits actin-myosin interaction), and Troponin T (binds to tropomyosin). When calcium binds to Troponin C, it causes a conformational change that moves tropomyosin away from actin's myosin-binding sites, allowing contraction to occur. Troponin is also a cardiac biomarker; elevated levels indicate myocardial infarction.
