Secretin is a peptide hormone released by S-cells in the duodenum in response to acidic chyme (partially digested food) entering from the stomach. Its primary role is to protect the duodenum by neutralizing the acidic gastric contents. It achieves this by stimulating the duct cells of the pancreas and liver to secrete a bicarbonate-rich fluid. Pancreatic bicarbonate is released into the duodenum, where it neutralizes the acid, raising the pH to an optimal level for pancreatic digestive enzymes to function. Secretin also inhibits gastric acid secretion and gastric emptying, giving the duodenum time to process the incoming acidic material. Additionally, it stimulates bile production by the liver. Thus, secretin is a key regulator of the duodenal pH and the chemical phase of digestion.
