Tetracaine is an ester-type local anesthetic. Esters are metabolized by plasma cholinesterase, not by the liver. In a patient with severe liver disease, ester anesthetics are safer because their metabolism is less affected. Lignocaine, Prilocaine, and Mepivacaine are amides and depend on liver metabolism.
