When a receptor is chronically blocked by an antagonist like atenolol, the body can respond by increasing the number of those receptors on the cell surface, a process called up-regulation. This is a compensatory mechanism, as the cell tries to become more sensitive to its natural signal (adrenaline/noradrenaline) by making more receptors available.
