Viral integration is a key mechanism for some DNA viruses and retroviruses. When the viral DNA becomes inserted into the host chromosome, it can disrupt the function of critical host genes. For HBV, integration is often random and can lead to genomic instability or place cellular proto-oncogenes under the control of strong viral promoters, contributing to hepatocellular carcinoma development.
