Apheresis is a specialized medical technology in which blood is withdrawn from a donor or patient, passed through a machine that separates it into its constituent parts, and the desired component is collected while the remainder is returned to the circulation. This allows for the targeted collection of specific blood products. There are different types: 1) Plateletpheresis: Collects platelets from a donor, yielding a high dose from a single donation. 2) Leukapheresis: Collects or removes white blood cells (used to collect stem cells for transplant or to reduce very high white counts in leukemia). 3) Plasma exchange (plasmapheresis): Removes and replaces a patient's plasma, used to treat conditions like TTP, Guillain-Barré syndrome, or myasthenia gravis. 4) Erythrocytapheresis: Exchanges red blood cells. The process is efficient and reduces donor exposure for patients needing repeated transfusions.
