RAS is a small GTPase that acts as a central molecular switch. When activated by growth factor signals (via receptor tyrosine kinases), it switches from an inactive GDP-bound state to an active GTP-bound state. Active GTP-bound RAS then directly activates the downstream RAF kinase, initiating the MAPK cascade.
