Phobia management involves gradual exposure therapy combined with relaxation techniques to reduce fear responses and improve functioning. Phobias are persistent, excessive fears of specific objects or situations leading to avoidance. Types: specific (animals, heights, injections); social anxiety disorder; agoraphobia. Treatment: cognitive-behavioral therapy with exposure (systematic desensitization - gradual exposure while relaxed); flooding (intense exposure); and medications (SSRIs, beta-blockers) for severe cases. Nursing role: provide supportive environment; teach relaxation techniques; encourage gradual exposure; monitor progress; and administer medications as ordered. Documentation includes fear hierarchy and exposure practice. Patient education about anxiety management. Family involvement for support. Exposure requires persistence; initial anxiety increase normal. Nurses help patients set achievable goals. Prevention of avoidance maintains gains. Comorbid conditions (depression, substance use) addressed. Phobias significantly impair quality of life; effective treatment enables participation in avoided activities.
