Prion diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), are unique in that they are caused by misfolded proteins called prions, not by a virus or bacterium. A key pathological finding is spongiform encephalopathy, where the brain tissue develops microscopic vacuoles, giving it a spongy appearance. There is no associated inflammation.
