Vitamin K is a cofactor for the enzyme gamma-glutamyl carboxylase, which adds carboxyl groups to glutamic acid residues on the precursor proteins of clotting factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX, and X, as well as proteins C and S. This carboxylation is necessary for their calcium-binding and biological activity.
