The condition characterized by the development of fibrous scar tissue (plaques) within the tunica albuginea of the penis, leading to painful curvature, indentation, or shortening during erection, is called Peyronie's disease. It is believed to result from trauma or microtrauma to the penis during intercourse or other activities in genetically predisposed individuals, leading to an abnormal wound-healing response. The inelastic plaques prevent uniform expansion of the tunica albuginea when the corpora cavernosa fill with blood, causing the penis to bend, often significantly, at the site of the plaque. The acute phase can involve painful erections, while the chronic phase is characterized by stable deformity and, in some cases, erectile dysfunction. Treatment options range from observation and oral medications to injections or surgical correction in severe cases.
