Forensic Entomology

Forensic entomology applies the study of insects and arthropods to legal investigations, a fascinating and practical topic for tertiary science students in Zambia. This module focuses on using insect evidence, primarily blowflies and beetles, to estimate the postmortem interval (PMI), determine if a body has been moved, and detect the presence of drugs or toxins. University and college learners will explore insect life cycles, succession patterns on decomposing remains, and how environmental factors affect development rates. In Zambia's diverse climates, from bush to urban settings, this knowledge is vital for forensic pathologists and investigators working on unattended deaths or homicides. The topic also covers the collection and preservation of entomological evidence at crime scenes. Mastering forensic entomology equips students with a unique toolset for contributing to death investigations, enhancing their employability in Zambian police units, medico-legal institutes, and environmental health agencies.

Outcomes

If you passExcellent! Your understanding of insect life cycles and their forensic application shows a keen eye for biological detail, a skill that will greatly benefit death investigation teams in Zambia.
If you don't pass yetEntomology requires linking insect data to time and environment. Review the key insect species, their development stages, and the formulas for PMI estimation. Studying case examples from similar climates can be very helpful.
