Forensic Geology and Soil Analysis

Forensic geology applies earth science principles to criminal investigations, primarily through the analysis of soil, minerals, and related materials. For Zambian tertiary students in forensic science programs, this topic provides an understanding of how soil's physical properties (color, texture, density) and mineralogical composition can serve as associative evidence. Students learn systematic collection protocols, microscopic examination techniques, and advanced instrumental methods like X-ray diffraction. Given Zambia's diverse geological landscape—from the Copperbelt's mineral-rich soils to the Kafue River's alluvial deposits—soil evidence can be instrumental in linking suspects to specific locations in cases of homicide, burial, vehicle transfer, or burglary. This module equips university and college graduates with the expertise to provide investigative leads, helping to narrow down search areas and corroborate other evidence, thereby strengthening casework for the Zambian justice system and law enforcement agencies.
