Forensic Pathology & the Investigation of Death
Q: In forensic pathology, what does the term 'defensive wounds' typically refer to?

For optimal lung cancer screening using sputum cytology, three to five consecutive early morning samples are recommended. This protocol increases diagnostic sensitivity by accounting for intermittent shedding of malignant cells and variations in sample quality. Studies show that collecting multiple samples over several days yields significantly higher detection rates than a single sample. The samples should be collected first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking, to minimize contamination and maximize cellular yield from overnight accumulation in the lungs. This multi-sample approach is particularly important in high-risk patients and screening programs.
